A Study of Concrete Hydration and Dielectric Relaxation Mechanism Using Ground Penetrating Radar and Short-Time Fourier Transform

چکیده
Ground penetrating radar (GPR) was used to characterize the frequency-dependent dielectric relaxation phenomena in ordinary Portland cement (OPC) hydration in concrete changing from fresh to hardened state. The study was experimented by measuring the changes of GPR A-scan waveforms over a period of 90 days, and processed the waveforms with short-time Fourier transform (STFT) in joint time-frequency analysis (JTFA) domain rather than a conventional time or frequency domain alone. The signals of the direct wave traveled at the concrete surface and the reflected wave from an embedded steel bar were transformed with STFT, in which the changes of peak frequency over ages were tracked. The peak frequencies were found to increase with ages and the patterns were found to match closely with primarily the well-known OPC hydration process and secondarily, the evaporation effect. The close match is contributed to the simultaneous effects converting free to bound water over time, on both conventional OPC hydration and dielectric relaxation mechanisms.

Dielectric Constant Measurement of Railroad Ballast and Application of STFT for GPR Data Analysis
Abstract Ballast fouling in railroad substructure is detrimental to railroad track effectiveness and its structural capacity. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) provides a rapid, effective and continuous approach to assess railroad substructure condition. However, unknown ballast dielectric constant and unclear interface between clean and fouled ballast limit the GPR assessment accuracy. In this st...
متن کاملProposing New Methods to Enhance the Low-Resolution Simulated GPR Responses in the Frequency and Wavelet Domains
To date, a number of numerical methods, including the popular Finite-Difference Time Domain (FDTD) technique, have been proposed to simulate Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) responses. Despite having a number of advantages, the finite-difference method also has pitfalls such as being very time consuming in simulating the most common case of media with high dielectric permittivity, causing the for...
متن کاملISAR Image Improvement Using STFT Kernel Width Optimization Based On Minimum Entropy Criterion
Nowadays, Radar systems have many applications and radar imaging is one of the most important of these applications. Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) is used to form an image from moving targets. Conventional methods use Fourier transform to retrieve Doppler information. However, because of maneuvering of the target, the Doppler spectrum becomes time-varying and the image is blurred. Joi...
متن کامل2d Gpr Data Analysis of Concrete Structures Using Migration Velocity Simulation Algorithm
Ground Penetrating Radar is becoming increasingly popular to use as a non-destructive assessment method for investigating reinforced concrete structures. The large amount of data collected take significant level of experience to interpret. Ground Penetrating Radar scans of concrete produce images which are made of arc segments. The shape of each arc is determined by the shape of the object, pos...
متن کاملPathologies cardiac discrimination using the Fast Fourir Transform (FFT) The short time Fourier transforms (STFT) and the Wigner distribution (WD)
This paper is concerned with a synthesis study of the fast Fourier transform (FFT), the short time Fourier transform (STFT and the Wigner distribution (WD) in analysing the phonocardiogram signal (PCG) or heart cardiac sounds. The FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) can provide a basic understanding of the frequency contents of the heart sounds. The STFT is obtained by calculating the Fourier tran...
